Retrograde planet topic is an age old and evergreen topic. It is discussed everywhere, but still confusing. I cannot say about others but to me it is still one of the centre of confusions in astrology. I have read about results of retrograde planets online and offline both. but when see my chart or anyone’s chart can cot understand what situation actually the retrograde planet is creating.
When someone says Jupiter is retrograded in chart and transit or Saturn is retrograde in chart and transit, what does it mean actually? do both situations are same? do retrogrades planets gives same result when in transit and when in birth horoscope? what is the effect of retrograde Jupiter, Saturn, mercury, etc. planet?
Many people say retrograde planets gives bad result only, is it true in every situation or does it have any cancellation yoga also?
In my brother’s chart Jupiter and mercury is retrograde but the Jupiter is exalted too. So, in this scenario, when a planet is exalted or debilitated what happens when the planet is also retrograde? Expecting, to the point answer of my question, I would be really grateful. and lastly thanks to shankar sir to open this q hub, previously i used to read his article but was unable to ask questions because commenting system were maximum closed in maximum articles. Now here I can ask question if i have any confusion not only to shankar sir but also to many learned friends present here.

A retrograde planet is also called Vakri Graha in Sanskrit, a vakri planet said to be moved backwards (nopt forwards like normal movemnet of a planet in a horoscope) due to its optical illusion. Among all planets Rahu and Ketu (north node and south node of the moon are always remain retrograde and said to move a complete anti clockwise way. All other planets apart from rahu and ketu become retrograde time to time only as they transit through the 12 zodiac signs along their orbit and after a certain time again they become straight or starts moving clockwise.
In my own opinion if the planet is aNatural Malefic in that case Retrogression of the planet will increase the negative effects than another Malefic planet in horoscope which is not a retrograde planet. If a Planet in horoscope or kundli is Natural Benefic in that case Retrogression of the planet will increase the positive effects than a Benefic planet which is actually not retrograde.
You can apply my above rules to judge a retrograde planet’s effect in a person’s life.

Some astrologers follow what vedic scriptures on astrology and their writers are saying, like Mantreshwar, Jaimini, Kalyan Varma etc, and after following those opinions they come to the following conclusions:
- Any planet in horoscope is strong when the planet becomes retrograde if it does not goes to its debilitation sign.
- Any Retrogression of a planet in horoscope gives the planet Chestabala (among many other important bala in astrology) or motional strength and gives result as per it lordship in the chart. If the lordship is good then the result will be good and there will be gradual progress in life regarding the part of life. But if the lordship is not good then it will bad results related to that part of life for the person.
- If a planet is exalted in a chart but retrograde as well then it will not act like a debilitated planet what many other people think
- If a Planet is retrograde in horoscope then it not only become strong but it also gives results like exalted planet only if it is not it is posited in the inimical sign or debilitated sign (Some astrologers do not agree with this rule at all).
- When a benefic retrograde planet is occupying the laxmi stana houses like 5 and 9th they give good result. On the other hand a malefic retrograde planet goes to houses like 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th.

There is many misconception in various astrologers about retrogression and its effect. In my own chart 4 planets are retrograde but i have seen retrograde planet do not play much significant role in molding destiny in certain way especially in Natal Chart. But when it comes to transit. Retrograde planet gives slow results and sometimes obstacles as well regarding their house and is significance. But Overall It is highly accepted by different astrologers that Retrograde planet gives more strong results in various times than normal direct motion planet. Although, It is misconception and myth among many astrologers that Retrograde planets gives the result of previous house as well. Like- Jupiter in 7th house in retrograde will also give the result of 6th house is totally fraud and fault concept. I have seen this in my horoscope result. Retrograde planet do not give more than 1 house result like Jupiter in 7th house retrograde only give 7th house result.
